New Jersey moves fast, and when emergencies happen, EMTs are the ones expected to respond even faster.
Regardless of whether you're in Newark, Trenton, or any other location within New Jersey, becoming an EMT requires readiness for various situations. However, gaining certification involves more than just enthusiasm. You must successfully complete the NREMT cognitive exam and fulfill all state criteria. This begins with proper training, an effective strategy, and useful preparation resources.
This guide walks you through all the steps involved in becoming an EMT in New Jersey.

Step 1: Meet the State's Basic EMT Requirements
Before you apply for a training program, make sure you meet the minimum eligibility criteria:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Hold a valid CPR certification (Healthcare Provider level)
- Be physically and mentally capable of performing EMT duties and be able to lift 75 pounds at least
- Must be a NJ resident
- May provide MMR, hepatitis, COVID-19, and influenza vaccination documents

Step 2: Complete a New Jersey-Approved EMT Training Program
You must complete an EMT course that’s approved by the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH), Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS). These training programs are available at community colleges, EMS academies, and training centers throughout the state. Programs typically last between 8 to 16 weeks and include:
- Classroom instruction
- Clinical or field experience
Once you complete the course, you’ll be eligible to take the NREMT cognitive exam.

Step 3: Pass the NREMT Cognitive Exam
The NREMT cognitive exam isn’t designed to test rote memorization. It’s designed to assess how well you think, not just what you remember. It’s a computer-adaptive test (CAT), meaning it adjusts in real time based on your performance. You could answer anywhere between 70 to 120 questions.
As of April 2025, the five updated domains covered include:
- Scene Size-Up and Safety
- Primary Assessment
- Secondary Assessment
- Patient Treatment and Transport
- Operations
Note: Items related to pediatric patient care are integrated throughout all domains.
Many test-takers find the exam format challenging. Therefore, the best way to study for the NREMT isn't simply reviewing the textbook. Rather, it's important to use practical resources that reflect the actual test format. This includes NREMT practice exams, participating in live sessions, and collaborating with a knowledgeable NREMT prep tutor.

Step 4: Apply for New Jersey EMT Certification
Once you pass the exam, you’ll apply for state certification through NJDOH OEMS.
The process includes:
- Submitting your course completion and NREMT cognitive exam results
- Providing proof of CPR certification
- Passing a state background check and fingerprinting
- Completing any other state-required paperwork
After approval, you’ll be officially certified to work as an EMT in New Jersey.

Step 5: Stay Certified
New Jersey EMT certifications are valid for three years.
To renew, you must:
- Complete the required continuing education
- Maintain your CPR certification
- Either keep your NREMT certification active or meet the state’s renewal criteria
Don’t wait until your license is close to expiration. Staying current is part of staying ready.
National vs. New Jersey Certification: What’s the Difference?
