If it’s your first time taking the test, we’re here to help you pass. At How To NREMT, we offer a proven 10-step training system, strategy-based NREMT test prep tools, and practice tests designed to mirror the real exam.

Step 1: Understand Indiana’s EMT Certification Requirements

To become a certified EMT in Indiana, you need to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Complete a state-approved EMT training program
  • Hold a current CPR certification
  • Pass the NREMT cognitive exam
  • Pass a psychomotor (skills) exam
  • Submit your application to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS)

Step 2: Train in a State-Approved EMT Program

Once you meet eligibility criteria, you need to enroll in a state-approved EMT course. These programs are typically offered through technical schools, community colleges, and EMS agencies. Once your course completes, the director verifies the completion with the National Registry so you can take the test.

Step 3: Pass the NREMT Cognitive Exam

The NREMT cognitive exam is a computerized test with 70 to 120 questions. It adapts to how you answer each question, which makes it hard to guess how well you’re doing. The National Registry has recently updated the course domains to reflect the real-world patient care needs. Starting April 2025, the candidates are expected to prepare in the following course categories:

  • Scene size-up
  • Primary and secondary assessment
  • Patient treatment and transport
  • Operations

You’ll take the test at a Pearson VUE test center.

If you’re a first-time test taker, you’ll need to build strong test-taking strategies and understand the scoring system. Are you retaking the test? We offer custom feedback and score breakdowns so you can target weak areas.

Note: Items related to pediatric patient care are integrated throughout all domains.

Step 4: Apply for Certification Through the IDHS

Once you’ve passed the NREMT cognitive exam, you can apply for your EMT certification in Indiana. Follow this simple process:

  • Create an account on the Indiana Public Safety Personnel Portal
  • Submit proof of passing the NREMT cognitive exam
  • Upload proof of CPR certification
  • Complete a background check
  • Pay the application fee

After that, it’s just a matter of waiting for your approval email.

What Makes the NREMT So Hard?

Most people don’t fail because they didn’t study. They fail because they didn’t study the right way.

The NREMT is unlike any other test. It’s adaptive, timed, and based on real-life EMS logic; not just rote memorization. First-time test takers are often caught off guard by how much strategy the exam requires.

Retakers usually know what the exam looks like, but don’t have the right guidance to identify their weak areas.
