Your Guide to Becoming an EMT in Pennsylvania!
Are you looking to pursue a career in emergency medical services? Do you also feel it’s a daunting task? You’re not alone. Many candidates struggle to pass the NREMT exam due to lack of understanding of the way the exam works and what’s required.
At How To NREMT, we assist students in passing the NREMT cognitive exam in their first attempt. Whether you’re a first-time tes-taker or retaking the exam after a failed attempt, you’re at the right place.
This guide will walk you through the entire process, outlining steps involved in becoming an EMT.

Step 1: Confirm Your Eligibility
Before training, make sure you meet these requirements:
- Be at least 16 years old
- Hold a high school diploma or GED
- Have current CPR certification (BLS for Healthcare Providers)
- Be physically and mentally fit for EMT duties
- Complete a background check
- Meet other requirements including a valid driver’s license, proof of immunity, malpractice insurance, etc.
Once you're approved, you can start an EMT training course.

Step 2: Enroll in a PA-Approved EMT Course
In Pennsylvania, EMT programs must be approved by the Department of Health, Bureau of EMS. These courses are taught at local EMS agencies, community colleges, and technical schools. The EMT training programs follow a blended format which includes classroom-based learning, clinical or ambulance ride-alongs, and hands-on skills. After completion of the course, you become eligible to take the NREMT cognitive exam.

Step 3: Pass the NREMT Cognitive Exam
This is the test that defines your future in EMS. The NREMT cognitive exam is a computer-adaptive test (CAT). It adjusts its difficulty based on your answers. You’ll get between 70–120 questions across five updated domains:
- Scene Size-Up and Safety
- Primary Assessment
- Secondary Assessment
- Patient Treatment and Transport
- Operations
Note: Items related to pediatric patient care are integrated throughout all domains.
The NREMT cognitive exam has a higher failure ratio for the first-timers; not become students don’t study. Rather, they don’t study the right way. The best way to study for NREMT is to find the right support. That’s where we step in as your guiding light.

Step 4: Apply for Pennsylvania EMT Certification
After passing the NREMT exam, you must apply through the Pennsylvania EMS Registry. Upload the following documents:
- Proof of EMT course completion
- NREMT cognitive exam results
- CPR certification
- Background check
- Application fee payment
Once approved, you’ll receive your Pennsylvania EMT credential.

Step 5: Maintain Your Certification
Pennsylvania EMT credentials are valid for three years. You must renew your certification to avoid delays in your practice. To renew, you must:
- Keep CPR certification current
- Complete required continuing education
- Maintain your NREMT certification or meet state renewal standards
Letting certification lapse means added tests or courses. It’s easier to stay current.
NREMT (National) vs Pennsylvania State Certification
Requirement | National Requirements | State Requirements |
---|---|---|
NREMT cognitive exam | Required | Required |
