Being an EMT is a fulfilling and daunting job. It requires being proactive and prepared to respond during emergencies. However, before you can help, you need to get certified. That means completing the right training, meeting state standards, and passing the NREMT cognitive exam.
Here’s a step-by-step look at how to make that happen in Nevada.
EMT Certification in Nevada: What You Need to Know
In Nevada, the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH) oversees the EMT licensure. The process also involves the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).
You'll need to work through both systems to earn your license.

Step 1: Meet the Basic Requirements
Before you apply for any training program, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Hold a current CPR certification (Healthcare Provider level)
- Be physically and mentally fit for EMS work
- Pass a criminal background check (this will be required later in the process)

Step 2: Complete a Nevada-Approved EMT Course
Enroll in an EMT course approved by the Nevada DPBH. These courses are offered at community colleges, technical schools, and EMS training centers across the state.
Programs usually last 8 to 16 weeks and include:
- Classroom instruction
- Skills labs
- Field experience (ambulance ride-alongs or hospital clinicals)
Once you pass the course, you’ll be eligible to take the NREMT cognitive exam.

Step 3: Pass the NREMT Cognitive Exam
The NREMT cognitive exam doesn’t focus on rote memorization, and that’s where many students struggle. The test is designed to assess how well you can think like an EMT.
The NREMT cognitive exam is a computer-adaptive test (CAT). That means:
- Questions get harder as you answer correctly
- You may get 70–120 questions
- It ends when the system determines a pass/fail
As of April 2025, the five updated test domains are:
- Scene Size-Up and Safety
- Primary Assessment
- Secondary Assessment
- Patient Treatment and Transport
- Operations
Note: Items related to pediatric patient care are integrated throughout all domains.
Many students find the format challenging. That’s why the best way to study for NREMT is to use realistic prep tools, not just class notes.
Smart prep includes:
- NREMT practice exams with real-world scenarios
- A structured NREMT prep classthat mimics the exam
- Guidance from an experienced NREMT prep tutor

Step 4: Apply for State Licensure in Nevada
Once you pass the exam, you can apply for your Nevada EMT license through the DPBH. You'll need to:
- Submit your NREMT certification
- Provide proof of your EMT course completion
- Pass a background check and fingerprinting
- Submit your CPR card
Once your application is approved, you’ll be officially licensed to work as an EMT in Nevada.

Step 5: Keep Your Certification Active
Nevada EMT licenses are valid for two years.
To renew, you’ll need to:
- Maintain current CPR certification
- Complete continuing education (CE) hours
- Keep your NREMT certification active (or follow state renewal guidelines)
Letting your license expire can lead to extra requirements later. Keep track of deadlines and keep learning.
