Documentation Checklist: What You Need for NREMT Recertification

May 26

Recertification is a critical step in maintaining your credentials as an EMS provider, and being fully prepared with the right paperwork can make the process smooth and hassle-free. Whether you’re an EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic, gathering the proper documentation required for NREMT recertification is essential to avoid delays or audit-related issues. In this guide, we provide a comprehensive checklist to help you stay on top of your recertification.

Why Documentation Matters

The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) requires all certified EMS providers to recertify every two years. During this time, you must demonstrate that you’ve met the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) requirements through continued education (CE) and any state or local mandates. Without the correct documentation, your recertification could be delayed, rejected, or selected for audit.

Even if you're not selected for the random NREMT recertification audit, you must maintain accurate records and be ready to submit them upon request. Your documents serve as proof that you've completed all training hours, met necessary standards, and remained up-to-date in your clinical knowledge and skills.

Core Documentation Required for NREMT Recertification

Here’s a detailed checklist of documents that all NREMT-certified professionals should gather and organize:

1. Continuing Education Certificates

One of the primary requirements for recertification is proof of completed CE hours. Depending on your certification level—EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic—you must complete the required number of hours in alignment with the NCCP model.

Breakdown of CE hours:

● EMT: 40 hours

● AEMT: 50 hours

● Paramedic: 60 hours

These hours must be distributed across three NCCP components:

● National Component

● State/Local Component

● Individual Component

Ensure each certificate includes:

● Course title

● Instructor name and credentials

● Date of completion

● CE hours awarded

● Accreditation or approval from an accepted provider (e.g., CAPCE)

2. CPR Certification

A current CPR certificationis mandatory for all EMS providers during recertification. The certification must be from a nationally recognized body such as:

● American Heart Association (AHA)

● American Red Cross (ARC)

● ASHI

Make sure the documentation clearly shows:

● Provider name

● Course type (e.g., BLS for Healthcare Providers)

● Expiration date

● Instructor credentials

3. Skills Verification (for EMTs/AEMTs)

If you are using the NREMT refresher course option or local/state verification for skills, you’ll need signed documentation from a qualified training officer, instructor, or medical director that confirms:

● You have maintained and demonstrated the necessary practical skills

● Your competency aligns with current clinical standards

This document is especially important if you're not currently affiliated with an agency that verifies skills on your behalf.

4. Affiliation or Agency Verification (if applicable)

For those who recertify via the agency verification pathway, you must provide a letter or form completed by your employer or agency verifying your:

● Ongoing EMS role

● Skills competency

● Participation in CE and training
This document must include an authorized signature (EMS director, training officer, etc.) and be submitted through the NREMT portal.

5. CE Provider Accreditation Proof (if self-reporting)

If you’re submitting CE hours from online or independent sources, ensure the provider is CAPCE-accredited or approved by your state. For NREMT test preparation online, only use resources that issue compliant CE certificates.

Keep a copy of the provider’s accreditation and attach it to your certificate, especially if it’s not a widely recognized organization. This is especially crucial for those not affiliated with a training program or EMS agency.

6. Valid Government-Issued ID

You may be asked to verify your identity through a scanned copy of a valid government-issued ID. While not always a required upload, it's a good practice to have it ready in case of identity confirmation during recertification processing.

7. Application Confirmation & Payment Receipt

Once you’ve submitted your recertification application and paid the fee through the NREMT portal, download and store:

● Confirmation page

● Payment receipt

These documents can serve as proof that your application was successfully submitted by the deadline.

Tips for Staying Organized

To avoid last-minute scrambling, here are some simple tips for keeping your documentation required for recertification in order:

● Create a dedicated digital folder (e.g., "NREMT Recert 2025")

● Save every certificate immediately after completing a course

● Use consistent file naming: "CPR_BLS_AHA_Exp2025.pdf"

● Set calendar reminders 3–6 months before your certification expires

● Back up your documentation to cloud storage

What If You're Audited?

If you’re selected for a random NREMT audit, you’ll need to submit all documents listed above within a specified timeframe. This is where your organization matters. The audit request will come with instructions and a deadline, so having digital copies of all required items will help ensure a smooth process.

Remember: The NREMT test prep process isn’t just about passing exams—it’s also about staying compliant and professional throughout your career.
